Modern Designs Using Traditional Techniques -
Joinery techniques are one of the trademarks that help to identify quality craftsmanship in fine woodworking. Traditional joinery methods, such as the mortise & tenon and dovetail joints, incorporate the strength of the wood into the intersection of mating parts. Instead of butting two pieces together, and then reinforcing them with nails, screws, or bulky bracing, time-tested traditional techniques, having been used for centuries, allow two pieces to join together either by inserting one pieces into the other, or by creating overlapping sections that fit snugly into position, often interlocking together. These techniques take additional time and care, but greatly enhance the strength of any joint by increasing the glue surface area, by utilizing the wood's own natural strength, and if incorporated correctly, by counteracting much of the stresses undergone in daily use. Many fine pieces of woodwork keep visible these elements of fine joinery, which often goes to further enhance the beauty and charm of a masterpiece. |
